MAJELLA MOYNIHAN REVEALS SHE SURVIVED FIVE SUICIDE ATTEMPTS AFTER MISTREATMENT FROM GARDAI

Majella Moynihan has spoken about her pregnancy while in the gardai, who she says forced her to give up her child.

As a young recruit, she and another young garda had a sexual relationship.

Ms Moynihan became pregnant in the 1980s and was charged for having pre-marital sex with another garda.

She was forced to give up her child for adoption and had to face gossip from her force in the Store Street garda station, Dublin.

Ms Moynihan said she was ‘shunned’ by the Guards but said they were ‘there the best they could’.

(...)

She added that a higher up garda told her: ‘If you had had an abortion, you wouldn’t have brought discredit on the force.’

Speaking to Sean O’Rourke on RTE Radio One, Ms Moynihan revealed that she had tried to take her life five times.

She said: ‘I’m strong, they thought they’d break me. They didn’t. I’m a very strong woman.
‘I have done counselling for years and years, they no longer have a hold over me, today I’m free.’

Ms Moynihan said the superiors looked down on her having a relationship within the force but they ‘weren’t the only couple’.

When she thought she may have been pregnant, the former garda went to a Well Woman clinic where they confirmed her pregnancy.

‘I stayed on the beat until I was 17 weeks and then I told a female inspector who told me to tell my superior,’ she recalled.

Ms Moyihan went to Cura, a pregnancy crisis agency at the time, who she said were ‘very supportive’.

She continued: ‘I would have been lost without them. As I said on many occasions, no one knew about my pregnancy.’

(...)
Ms Moynihan said she was never once told by her superiors that she was not to have a sexual relation with another Garda.

When asked if she thought to go to the Garda Representative Association, the mother said she was never made aware of the organisation.

‘No one ever told me that I could have had someone beside me to support me, no one came forward to support me,’ she insisted.

‘It was [GRA’s] job to come to me, not me to go to them.

‘The welfare officers in the Gardai at the time didn’t apporach me, I was very much alone in that period of darkness. It was horrific.

‘Every day I put on my uniform and thought of my unborn child. What if I was assaulted and couldn’t tell my story to anyone?’

Ms Moynihan said she had no support from the Gardai or GRA.

(…)

When Ms Moynihan welcomed her son, David, at Galway Regional Hospital where she was refused an epidural and her child was taken out of her arms.

She recalled: ‘I was in horrific pain. I ripped myself. I felt I was nothing to them.’

Speaking through tears, Ms Moynihan said: ‘When David was born, they just took him. They just took him.’

Ms Moynihan wonders if she had come from a strong family, would she have been treated in such a way?

(...)

‘I often wonder if I had come from a strong family, would they have done this. I don’t think so.’

She said: ‘From the first time I told the authorities, it was adoption, adoption, adoption.

‘I often wonder if I had been supported [by the Gardai] would I have kept my baby.
‘It’s a decision I regret to this day.’

Following her interview, a Garda spokesman told Extra.ie: ‘Arrangements will be made today Monday, June 17 2019, to provide Ms Moynihan with a personal apology from the Commissioner.’

Do You Shy Away From Shy Students?
(…)
It goes without saying that teachers of teenagers often worry about how fun and dynamic classes must be so as to keep students engaged and motivated. So pervasive is this concern among professionals who teach youngsters that we sometimes tend to disregard the importance of taking into account the quieter and shyer students in our classes.

Before suggesting how teachers can deal with shy students in the classroom, we would like to talk a little bit about shyness. Heitz, D. (2019) explains that ‘shyness is a feeling of fear and discomfort caused by other people, especially in new situations or among strangers. It’s an unpleasant feeling of self-consciousness – a fear of what some people believe others are thinking. This feeling can inhibit a person’s ability to do or say what they want…’

Having this scenario in mind, can you imagine how difficult it is for a shy person to face a language lesson? Language students are, after all, invited to communicate, participate and speak most of the time during a lesson. At least this is what teachers usually expect if they follow a communicative approach. The fact of the matter is to what extent teachers of teenagers are willing to adapt activities in a way that embraces the shy students.

These students don’t want a boring lesson, but they don’t want to be on the spotlight either. They might dread what type of interaction they will be exposed to; moving their bodies, singing and role playing are likely to threaten their well-being, thus their readiness to attend our classes. What we see as a fun activity might be perceived as something that crosses their boundaries. We teachers have to be careful whenever we ask them to perform a task in front of the others. One of the main things teenagers avoid at all costs is getting embarrassed. The best thing to do, then, is to find a common ground in which activities contemplate all students in the group.

One way to prevent discomfort from happening is to make sure we are providing students with time to prepare their answers before speaking. Another must is to monitor their production carefully, to help them correct any mistakes; by doing so, they’ll feel more confident while being asked to participate. When the moment of feedback with the whole group comes, these students will feel better able to express their ideas.
(…)
Truth be told, there isn’t a magic formula when it comes to dealing with shy students. Being able to recognize they deserve special attention and that our planning can’t exclude them from activities is a start. Also, keeping an open space for them to talk to us about their struggles means we’ve been building rapport effectively.

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle have now found themselves in big trouble

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle have wound up finding themselves in huge amounts of trouble. Emily Andrews, a royal commentator made these observations public in one of her pieces for Woman magazine.

That piece highlighted just how big the appetite is for their royal lives, given that they snagged multiple deals upon moving to the US.

For those unversed, the duo was paired up with many streaming giants like Spotify and even Netflix, who they currently have a £80m deal alongside.

And in the eyes of Ms Andrews, “Commercially speaking, what's worked so far for Harry and Meghan is anything that closely involves their own lives (and some would say, spilling the tea)”.
And “When they step back, their content tends to fail,” she added.

That in itself, “is a major problem,” she doubled down saying. Particularly for Harry, who has made it clear that he no longer wants to talk about his 'old' royal life”.

Power restored to most of Puerto Rico after massive New Year's Eve blackout

Power has been restored to more than 98 percent of Puerto Ricans affected by a massive power outage, the US territory's electric utility said on Wednesday. The power company blamed the New Year's Eve blackout on a fault in an underground cable, but investigations are still under way.

Power was restored to most of Puerto Rico Wednesday after a major blackout plunged the island into darkness on New Year's Eve, the US territory's electric utility said.

Electricity supply had been restored to at least 1.44 million customers, or 98.3 percent of those affected, by noon local time (1600 GMT), according to Luma Energy.

The power company said preliminary findings indicated a fault in an underground cable may have been the cause of the outage, although investigations continue.

Puerto Rico, a Spanish-speaking archipelago, came under US control in 1898 and has faced perennial infrastructure issues, exacerbated by devastating hurricanes and a 2020 earthquake.

The utility company said power had been restored to both of the capital San Juan's major airports, key water supply facilities and to at least 31 hospitals.

Spokesperson Jose Perez warned, however, that power cuts could continue to affect some areas "as the power plants reach their optimum level."

(…)
Governor Pedro Pierluisi said he had spoken with US President Joe Biden, and had asked for continuing Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) support.

"This is a long and arduous process that requires local and federal collaboration, which is why I requested that FEMA continue facilitating the projects we have begun," he said in a social media post.

He said Washington had approved a two-year extension for the use of temporary generators that provide the island 350 MW in energy, which will now continue to do so until 2027.

Those generators had been put in place following the impact of Hurricane Fiona in 2022.

Earlier, Luma's director of external affairs Perez told AFP the fault that initiated the power failure had caused a cascade effect that then led to the general blackout.

On Tuesday, Luma said it could take up to 48 hours for full restoration of power to all customers.

New Year's resolutions often don't last. Here's why they fail and how to keep them, according to an expert.

Working up your list of resolutions for the new year? Studies show most New Year's resolutions are bound to fail, so we asked an expert how to make the most of your 2025 goals.

How long do New Year's resolutions normally last?
While it differs for everyone, a 2023 poll from Forbes Health found most people give up resolutions after less than four months.

According to the survey, just under 1 in 10 people (8%) said their resolutions lasted a month, 21.9% reported two months, 22.2% reported three months and 13.1% said their resolutions lasted four months. Only 1% said they lasted for 11 or 12 months.

What percentage of New Year's resolutions ultimately fail?
While nearly half of Americans make New Year's resolutions, only about 25% of people actually stay committed to their resolutions after just 30 days, according to Columbia University. And even fewer, less than 10%, accomplish their goals.

Why do New Year's resolutions fail so often?
Resolutions often fail because people never turn them into habits, said author Justin Hale, an adviser and speaker at leadership and management consulting company Crucial Learning.

“Research shows that 40% of what we do day in and day out are habits. Habits are things that you do without even thinking. You do those things like a routine, habitually, almost automatic,” he told CBS News. “The problem is people, when they want to be better in the new year, they never focus on understanding what are the exact behaviors that I need to be done to turn into habits, and what's the plan I'm going to create to make that thing habitual”.

This shift may look like “I want to run more in the new year” to "I'm going to run 30 minutes each day."

“It's really specific and really clear — really measurable”, he said. “Building new habits in the new year is less about grit and willpower, and it's more about having the right plan to make that new behavior habitual”.

Questão 10
Jane Cleveland rustled the pages of the Daily Leader and sighed. A deep sigh that came from the innermost recesses of her being. She looked with distaste at the marble-topped table, the poached egg on toast which reposed on it, and the small pot of tea. Not because she was not hungry. That was far from being the case. Jane was extremely hungry. At that moment she felt like consuming a pound and a half of well-cooked beefsteak, with chip potatoes, and possibly French beans. The whole washed down with some more exciting vintage than tea.
But young women whose exchequers are in a parlous condition cannot be choosers. Jane was lucky to be able to order a poached egg and a pot of tea. It seemed unlikely that she would be able to do so tomorrow. That is unless—
She turned once more to the advertisement columns of the Daily Leader. To put it plainly, Jane was out of a job, and the position was becoming acute. Already the genteel lady who presided over the shabby boarding-house was looking askance at this particular young woman.
‘And yet,’ said Jane to herself, throwing up her chin indignantly, which was a habit of hers, ‘and yet I’m intelligent and good-looking and well educated. What more does anyone want?’
According to the Daily Leader, they seemed to want shorthand typists of vast experience, managers for business houses with a little capital to invest, ladies to share in the profits of poultry farming (here again a little capital was required), and innumerable cooks, housemaids and parlourmaids—particularly parlourmaids.
